A young girl of about the age of 11 woke with a start. Her bedroom was completely dark, and through the tiny window opposite her bed she could see lightning flashing. She pulled her covers up to her nose and glanced around the room, shaking slightly. The room was practically empty, except for a wardrobe, a desk, a bookshelf and the bed she was laying in. The hottest day of the season was drawing to a close. The grass which was, under regular circumstances, emerald and gleaming sat parched and dying, practically screaming for water. Rerinka stared, unfocused out the train window, watching the moutains and trees fly by. She felt hot tears running down her face, but could care less. Nothing really mattered anymore. She looked down to her lap at her sleeping brother. Ombre was snoring softly, his face tear stained and red. Rerinka ran her fingers through his hair, fighting back the urge to just fall to her knees and cry.
Ombre's face was cut and bruised. His arm was wrapped in a sling, and Rerinka could see the bone sticking out from under his flesh.
